Alexander the Great acceded as the great Emperor of Macedonia in the year 336 B.C. at the age of only 20 when his father, Philip of Macedonia, was assassinated. Great success and fame came to him only 3 years after that when he started his famous journey to Asia Minor and defeated the Persians at the battle of the Granicus. Alexander passed away on June 10th, 323 BC, at the age of 32 in Babylon. The aim of "Following Alexander the Great" is to explore the route that Alexander followed within the first 2 years of his journey through Anatolia.


Day 1 : We land at Istanbul's international airport to meet our guide and transfer to our hotel. Dinner, and overnight in Istanbul.

Day 2 : After breakfast at the hotel, we drive via Thrace and cross the Dardanelles to Canakkale. Dinner, and overnight in Canakkale.

Day 3 : We drive along the Graenicus River and, after lunch at a local restaurant, visit the ruins of the garrison city of Dascylium where Alexander, on the slopes of Mount Ida, defeated the Persian Army. Then we follow the spectacular scenery once again to Canakkale, following the valleys that Alexander's armies once marched through. Tonight we dine at a local fish restaurant. Dinner, and overnight in Canakkale.

Day 4 : We check out and drive South to visit Troy, the famous city of the Illiad. Then we drive further South to Bergama and visit Pergammum's Acropolis and Ascylepion. Lunch and dinner at a local restaurant. Dinner, and overnight in Izmir.

Day 5 : We visit Sardes with its fabulous gymnasium and the first synagogue of Western Anatolia, which is mentioned as one of the seven Churches of the Revelation. After lunch, we head further to the South and arrive at the town of Selcuk, where we have our dinner at the hotel. Dinner, and overnight in Selcuk

Day 6 : Today we first drive to the Virgin Mary's House; after that we visit Ephesus which was founded in the eleventh century BC by the Ionians. Strolling through the streets of Ephesus, we will witness the perfection of the Graeco-Roman Art. Later in the afternoon we will visit St John's Basilica, believed to be the tomb of the Apostle John, Christ's beloved disciple. From the basilica, we will be able to look down on the remains of the temple of Artemis. We end the day with our visit to the Isa Bey Mosque before heading on to our hotel for a well-earned rest. Dinner, and overnight in Selcuk

Day 7 : After breakfast, we drive first to Prienne, formerly a leading member of the Panionic League. As we drive further south, we visit Miletus, then we arrive at Didyma, where we have lunch at a local restaurant, circumstances permitting, across the road from the temple. As the historian Pausanias wrote; 'The sanctuary of Apollo at Didymoi, and the oracle there are more ancient than the Ionian settlement.' Dinner, and overnight in Selcuk.

Day 8 : We start driving to Kalkan giving an en route visit to Aphrodisias, which was the city dedicated to the cult of Aphrodite. As we visit the sculptor's museum in Aphrodisias, we have lunch at a local restaurant, then head on to Kalkan. Tonight, we have the chance of eating at a fish restaurant located on the Kalkan Marina. Overnight in Kalkan. (Extension, out of Alexander's route.)

Day 9 : We take the scenic coastal drive to Antalya via Xanthos, the capital of the Lycian League, then Myra the famous town of St. Nicholas, where we see the Lycian masonry on the rock tombs. After lunch at local restaurant, we drive further and visit Phaselis, the famous port of Lycia. Tonight we have dinner at one of the restaurants at the old city. Overnight in Antalya.

Day 10 : Full day sightseeing at Perge, one of the most impressive sites of Pamphylia, and Aspendos, the world's best preserved ancient theatre. After lunch at a local restaurant near the Aspendos theatre, we drive Side, and then back to Antalya to visit the Antalya Archaeology Museum and end our visits for the day. Dinner, and overnight in Antalya.

Day 11 : As we check out, we take the morning flight to Ankara, first we drive to the old district of the city to visit the Anatolian Civilisations Museum. Lunch will be served at the heart of the modern city, then we visit Ataturk's Mausoleum, which is where, Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, the founder of the modern Turkish Republic is buried. Then we head on to Gordion, where Alexander cut the Gordion knot. Dinner will be at an old mansion at the Ankara Citadel. Overnight in Ankara.

Day 12 : Drive to Cappadocia visiting the Ihlara Canyon, a mirage at the steps of Anatolia. After lunch at a village restaurant in the valley, we descend to the centre of the earth in Kaymakli Underground City. Dinner, and overnight in Cappadocia.

Day 13 : Today we get introduced to the lunar landscape of Cappadocia at Dervent valley, then we head on to Zelve Open Air Museum, which is one the earliest inhabited and latest abandoned monastic settlements of Cappadocia. Seeing the best examples of the fairy chimneys at Pasabag fairy Chimneys Valley, we drive further to Avanos, where we have lunch at a local restaurant. Goreme Open Air Museum, is where we visit the rock carved churches and see the colorful Byzantine frescoes. We end the day hiking up to the top of Uchisar Castle, which is the highest and the most dominant point that giving a breathtaking view of Cappadocia. Evening flight to Istanbul. Dinner, and overnight in Istanbul.

Day 14 : We start our first morning in Istanbul strolling to the great square which was once the Byzantine Hippodrome. Now it is a great parklike area surrounded by the Blue Mosque, Hagia Sophia, and the Underground Cistern, commonly called the Basilica Cistern. After lunch at a local restaurant, retracing our steps and walk to Topkapi Palace. More than a palace, it is an assemblage of museums, containing the collections amassed by the Sultans over almost five centuries. After Topkapi Palace, we finish the day with a Grand Bazaar visit. Dinner, and overnight in Istanbul.

Day 15 : Fly home or Istanbul extension on request.
